Efficacy of dental health advice as an aid in reducing cigarette smoking in Dental Clinic 654, Health Department, BMA

Abstract :

Objective The purpose of this experimental study was to test the efficacy of smoking reduction advice programme in cigarette smokers attending Dental Clinic 654, Dental Health Division, BMA, wishing to reduce their cigarette consumption.

Materials and methods 90 male cigarette smokers were divided into two groups : experimental and control groups. The experimental group, 46 cigarette smokers, received smoking reduction advice whereas the control group, 44 cigarette smokers, didn’t received those advice at the beginning of the study. However, the control group received those advice at the end of the study in the same content as the experimental group did. Both groups received dental health instruction and periodontal care before intervention and follow-up at 1 week, 1 month, 12 month.

Results Those advised against smoking showed that the average number of cigarette smoking per day between the experiment and control groups have significant difference at confidence level 95% (p<0.05) during treatment and follow-up 1 week (p=0.000), 1 month (p=0.000), 3 month (p=0.008), 6 month (p=0.026), 9 month (p=0.016) and 12 month (p=0.002). At the end of the study, 32% of intervention subjects reported quit smoking compared with 7.4% of controls. 28% of intervention subjects reduced half and more than half of their initial cigarette consumption compared with 18.5% of control subjects. 28% of those advised against smoking reduced cigarette smoking less than half of their initial cigarette smoking compared with 18.5% of control subjects.

Conclusion The results indicated that advice against smoking can be effective aid to reduce cigarette consumption.
