Comparing the efficacy of chlorine
dioxide and sodium hypochlorite against
bacteria in dental unit water system

Abstract :
Objective To compare the efficacy of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on decontamination of bacteria in dental unit water system.
Materials and methods Test various concentrations of ClO2 and NaOCl against planktonic bacteria collected from dental unit water line (DUWL). Select concentration of ClO2 to test its efficacy in decontaminating DUWL in real clinical situation. The results were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U test.
Results ClO2 and NaOCl at 5 and 50 ppm have similar effects against planktonic bacteria in samples from DUWL where more than 95% reduction in total bacterial count was observed. Cleaning DUWL with 50 ppm ClO2, 50 ppm NaOCl and filtered water were able to reduce total bacterial count in DUWL more than 98%. However bacterial quantities returned to the level above that of baseline within 1 week after cleaning and all next 4 weeks of experiment.
Conclusion ClO2 and NaOCl are able to kill planktonic bacteria in DUWL but are not more effective than filtered water when used as disinfectants to decontaminate bacterial biofilm in DUWL.
