หลักการบันทึกใน screening survey จะมีคำจำกัดความดังนี้
1.) Demarcated opacity มีลักษณะ
Translucency ของ Enamel
Normal thickness with a smooth surface
Clear boundary
2.) Diffuse opacity มีลักษณะ
Normal thickness
Smooth surface
No clear boundary
3.) Hypoplasia
Reduce localized thickness of enamel : pits or groove
ใน general purpose epidemiological studies จะตรวจละเอียดมากกวา screening survey
โดยแบงความผิดปกติของสีเนื้อเคลือบฟน (Enamel) ออกเปน
Line มีลักษณะเปนเสนสีขาว (white line) ไปตามโครงสรางของฟน
Patchy มีลักษณะเปน cloudy area of opacity and no clear boundary
Confluence เปนลักษณะของหลายๆ patchy มารวมกันและจะขยายขอบเขตกวางมากข้น

1. ฟนที่จะตรวจ แหงหรือเปยกก็ได
2. ฟนหนา ตรวจดาน labial, occlusal
3. ฟนหลัง ตรวจดาน buccal, lingual, occlusal
4. ฟนแทบน ใชฟน incisors, canines, first premolar
5. ฟนแทลาง ใชฟน first molar
6. ฟนน้ำนมบน ใชฟน incisors, canines
7. ฟนน้ำนมลาง ใชฟน first molar
